RISD GD Senior Show: It Takes A Village


It Takes a Village… to raise a child. All of us stepped into RISD as children, ready to learn, ready to find ourselves and our practices, ready to find our callings. The camaraderie and community we struggled to foster as first-year students while traversing the challenges of pandemic times were all the more cherished when we stepped into the nine floors of the Design Center.

The identity reflects the nine floors of the RISD Design Center—a rounded window, an out-of-service elevator, a checkered floor—deconstructed and pieced back together, much like the way we built our own experiences. Through shared challenges and moments of connection, we turned these walls into a community that shaped not just our work, but who we are as designers.

Layout
The exhibition design and layout recreates the essence of the building’s nine floors with each space reflecting its respective unique character and function. Red circle numbers, referencing the posters and identity, guide visitors through the layout, signaling which floor they are in.


Main Hall


The main hall symbolizes the first floor (GD Commons) of the Design Center building, which often features large installations and student projects and is the go-to gathering place for our department. Also representing the last floor (upperclassman studio) of the Design Center, our class roster a photo collage of the past last four years is displayed here, celebrating the community of our cohort.


Analog Room
This space highlights physical work and experimental fabrication, showcasing the hands-on and innovative processes created at the 3rd floor Typeshop and 7th floor RISO studio.


Publication Room
In this room, lounge areas with a red couch and bean bag recreate the relaxed, creative energy of the classroom workspaces, accompanied by publications and story-driven graphic design work.


Digital Room
This room emphasizes video, motion, and digitally inspired work, reflecting the diverse practices that emerged in the student studio spaces, and again, creating relaxing seating areas.




Activity Room
Designed as a collaborative and interactive space similar to that of the 5th Floor classroom/lighting studio, this area invites visitors to engage directly by using stencils and materials to create posters of their own “village,” fostering a sense of shared creativity and connection.
